ABOUT OUR HISTORY

In 1955 several community members recognized the need for an ambulance service in Macungie and the surrounding area.  In that first year, members created a schedule of what they called “sleeping” teams and responded to 50 calls for service in a 1948 Packard.  In the decades that followed, countless individuals would volunteer their time to serve others as members of the Macungie Ambulance Corps.

In 1985 the Pennsylvania legislature passed the first EMS act. This created a set of training and equipment standards and began the modernization of Emergency Medical Services in the Pennsylvania. In 1990, with the ability to receive reimbursement from insurance companies and increasing calls for service, the Corps hired its first administrative employees. In that year, the Corps responded to 366 calls for service.

The 90’s saw significant growth in the community. In 1992 the Corps moved to Lower Macungie Township into what is now the Lower Macungie Public Works facility on Indian Creek Road. By 1998 the annual call volume had increased to nearly 900 calls for service and the organization began hiring EMTs to supplement the volunteer staffing.

By 2006 the call volume increased to nearly 2,000 calls annually. A third and fourth ambulance were purchased and the organization built and moved into a new station on North Walnut Street on land donated by Buckeye Partners. Also in 2006, Macungie Ambulance Corps began providing Advanced Life Support to better serve the citizens.

Growth continued in the years that followed. Today, in 2025, the Macungie Ambulance Corps responds to 5,000 calls for service with 5 ambulances and several support vehicles. We continue to be staffed by a mix of paid and volunteer members to meet the needs of the still growing community.
